Campus Free Speech

About Campus Free Speech

Free speech has become a hot button issue on campuses. On its face, the First Amendment seems simple—people have a legal right to say whatever they want. But in reality, free speech rights are much more nuanced and are, of course, much less absolute. CL can give your students a working knowledge of how the 1st operates on both public and private campuses including strategies and the best practices for real world situations.

Topics covered include:

  • The basics of First amendment law including the myriad exceptions
  • Professors and Free Speech including Semi-Affiliated Accounts (unofficial social media accounts maintained by professors)
  • Students and individual free speech rights with an emphasis in online speech
  • Invited outside speakers and balancing free speech with safety and other institutional concerns
  • Public forum speech and profanity rules and time place and manner restrictions
  • Free Speech vs. Free From Consequences

Bio:

In 1998, attorney C.L. Lindsay III, left his practice in New York City to found the Coalition for Student & Academic Rights (CO-STAR). Since then, acting as its Executive Director, he has built CO-STAR into a national student rights organization that helps thousands of college students with their legal problems, free of charge, each year.

C.L. is a nationally recognized expert and leader in the field of student rights and academic freedom. He literally wrote the book on legal problems at colleges. The College Student’s Guide to the Law has become the definitive authority used by students, university counsel and as a textbook for masters and law courses nationwide. He graduated magna cum laude from Denison University, and received his J.D. from the University of Michigan. In his spare time, he teaches courses in Law and Literature at the University of Pennsylvania.
