SX Duo Outdoors wide copySteel Express is one of the most unique and dynamic groups on the Chicago scene. Their distinctive blend of Caribbean steel pans, with an exciting American beat, has delighted audiences throughout the Chicagoland area.

Steel Express performs music of the Caribbean. The group was founded by Mark Smith in 1982. He has a Masters Degree in Percussion from the American Conservatory of Music and has traveled to Trinidad several times to study and perform “Pan” and its music “Calypso.” His expertise and experience ensures the authenticity of the Trinidad tradition, as well as the highest degree of contemporary musical quality and
professionalism.

Steel Express continues to perform on the Chicago scene with great vitality. The group performs at various hotels and convention centers, at country clubs, parks, nightclubs and private homes throughout the Midwest, presenting a wide variety of entertainment for festivals, schools, weddings, corporate events, and parties of all kinds. They have been featured at Taste of Chicago, the World Cup 94 gala at Navy Pier, with Jimmy Buffet at Popular Creek, with Johnny B. and his radio show gram, and in the 1998 Bruce Willis movie, Mercury Rising.
