From humming Billy Joel in the backseat during childhood road trips to performing on stages across Italy, music has defined Ben Tatar’s life. A multi-instrumentalist (trombone, trumpet, tuba, piano, guitar, bass, and vocals), Tatar has shared the stage with renowned artists such as Maria Schneider, Arturo Sandoval, and the Kansas City Symphony Orchestra. Locally, his performances have graced iconic Chicago venues including Gallagher Way at Wrigley Field, Millennium Park, and The Green Mill Lounge. Beyond Chicago, he’s participated in Milwaukee’s Third Ward Summer Sizzle and Italy’s Umbria Jazz Festival. Tatar also performs with jazz and Top 40’s/wedding bands throughout the Chicagoland area.
An accomplished educator, Tatar teaches K-5 general music in Illinois School District 96 and has worked with children as young as two through programs like Old Town School of Folk Music’s Wiggleworms. His partnerships with organizations such as Chicago JCC and the Chicago Botanic Gardens highlight his community engagement. Tatar leads Ben Tatar and the Tatar Tots, a kids’ rock band blending humor, crowd engagement, and musical diversity. During the pandemic, his virtual programming and ‘Sidewalk Serenades’ earned recognition from NPR and NBC5 Chicago, showcasing his innovative approach to family entertainment.
