This band is perfect for Speakeasy/Prohibition parties, Mardi Gras/Fat Tuesday celebrations, Great Gatsby style events, swing dances, and concerts.

Their repertoire includes the music of Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, and Bing Crosby. The Recession Seven is loved by young and old, musical novices and aficionados alike!

The seven-piece ensemble is led by Petra van Nuis, a vocalist praised by the Chicago Tribune for her “interpretive savvy…light-and-silvery vocals and, better still, saucy manner of delivery that emphasizes the art of the double entendre.”   The three horn front line provides exciting support behind Petra’s dynamic vocals while the rhythm section drives a swinging beat! Trombonist Russ Phillips grew up “in the wings” listening to his dad, Russ Phillips Sr. play trombone in Louis Armstrong’s All-Stars and decided to follow in his dad’s footsteps. Reedist Eric Schneider began his early career as a member of the bands of Count Basie and Earl Fatha Hines and has played with many legends including Benny Goodman, Tony Bennett, Dizzy Gillespie and Ella Fitzgerald. Trumpeter Art Davis is charter member of the Chicago Jazz Orchestra who has toured with Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra and Rosemary Clooney.

In addition to Jazz Festival appearances around the country, the Recession Seven regularly plays their hometown of Chicago at top venues such as the Jazz Showcase, the Green Mill, Andy’s Jazz Club, Fitzgerald’s, Hey Nonny, Winter’s Jazz Club and the Chicago Jazz Festival.
