Catharsis Productions: The Hook Up

An engaging conversation about the good, bad, and ugly of “hook up” culture.

This engaging discussion pulls back the covers on hook-up culture, clarifying the distinction between good, bad, and abusive sexual encounters. We give our audiences honest information about what sex is so it is easier to identify what sex isn’t.  It gets audience feedback to explore societal norms surrounding language and behavior and explains how these can inadvertently contribute to a society that turns a blind eye to sexual violence. It ends with a discussion on bystander intervention that goes beyond the moment of crisis and inspires and equips people to intervene in unhealthy and stereotypical cultural messaging.

Learning Objectives:

• Prioritize our individual roles in creating cultural change in our communities
• Explain the continuum of harm of sexual violence
• Identify and understand how problematic language contributes to a climate that condones sexual violence, resists helping those in need, and makes it hard for survivors to speak up
• Clarify the differences between healthy, unhealthy, and abusive encounters
• Further explore the role alcohol plays in sexual assault
• Examine and identify how offenders utilize stereotypes and victim blaming to continue to harm
• Identify social cues a bystander could interpret as signs that an intervention is warranted
• Practice how to use these tools to intervene in situations beyond the bar or party to make sustainable cultural change
