Katie Kramer: Gender 101
Katie Kramer is a writer, speaker, and activist who has been involved in the college market for over a decade.
A passionate advocate for the trans community, Katie and her husband founded Camp Indigo in 2015, a summer day camp specifically for trans and gender-diverse youth. The camp’s main objective is to create a safe space where children can be celebrated and seen for who they truly are. Katie is never one to shy away from difficult conversations, as she believes they help expand our knowledge and understanding of the world around us.
During her workshops, she encourages growth and challenges her audience to think critically about their preconceptions of gender, biological sex, and sexuality. She meets every individual where they are on their journey, facilitating open dialogue to enable everyone to co-create the conversation. Despite the word “gender” becoming almost taboo in today’s world, Katie believes that every one of us makes gender-related decisions multiple times every day. From the clothes we wear to our hairstyle and our name, these decisions affect how we feel about ourselves and how others perceive us. Through her workshops, Katie aims to empower her audience with the knowledge of gender diversity, challenge their preconceptions, and enable them to become confident allies in the world.

Learning Outcomes:
• What is allyship? What does it mean to be an ally? And what are the barriers that prevent us from speaking up?
• Basic gender terms and vocabulary: Transgender! Cisgender! Pronouns! And how to make sure you’re being thoughtful with everyone you meet.
• The ISMS: LGBT isn’t just one thing – there are many identities within ‘the alphabet.’ Race? Ethnicity? Ageism? Ableism? Know the difference and how to use inclusive language when you’re talking about a community vs. an individual person.
• Politically Correct? Or Just a Good Person?: Examining the ways we get defensive when we’re asked to evolve.
• Learning on vs. learning from: Everything we know about social interaction we’ve learned by messing up on someone else. It’s natural to learn through observation, inquiry, successes, and failures. That said, it is ‘unfair’ and outdated to rely on marginalized persons to provide you with an education based on their lived experience.
• Never tokenize! Often our most marginalized team members are asked to speak on behalf of all members of their respective identity groups – how can we stop this practice?
• Resources to use TODAY! Assessments, tools, sentence starters, additional reading – oh my!

Bringing the heart of Louisiana to every stage—All Mardi Gras, All the time!
Hurricane Gumbo is an eight-piece, Chicago-based band that combines zydeco, rhythm & blues, jazz and funk to produce a sound that can only be called one thing – Louisiana party music. Featuring the music of Dr. John, Neville Brothers, Funky Meters, Chubby Carrier, Edgar Winter, Terrence Simien, Bobby Rush, Little Feet, Radiators, and so on… not to mention some tasty originals.
“Hurricane” Bill, an energetic “Mexi-Cajun” born in the steamy swamps of Louisiana’s Bayou country, leads the band with his fiery vocals and rockin’ accordion. Hurricane Gumbo’s smokin’ rhythm section consists of “Sleepin’ Jesus” on bass, the “Lunchbox” on drums, “Kenny-E” on guitar, and “Zydeco” Joe on rubboard, conga drums and percussion. Finally, the Hurricane Horns – a.k.a. “Wif” on alto sax, “Miles” on tenor sax and “Dr Maybe” on trumpet. Tight riffs and tasty harmonies thrown in the pot and Hurricane Gumbo becomes one of the tastiest Louisiana-style bands north of the Crescent City.
Since 1994, Hurricane Gumbo has entertained at major music fests from New Orleans to Milwaukee, plus all points in between. Presently based in the Chicago area, the band has played to packed venues throughout the Midwest—-and there’s nothing more authentic North of Lafayette, LA. The band has released three CD albums (with a fourth in the works) and has performed numerous live television and radio appearances…including the House of Blues, Taste of Chicago, Rock Island’s Gumbo Ya Ya festival and Summerfest sharing the stage with New Orleans artists Dr. John, the Iguanas and Chubby Carrier & the Bayou Swamp Band.
